Manchester United have thrown down a statement of intent ahead of the new season after signing both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin this afternoon for a combined fee of around £40m.
Reacting to the news of the double signings, United manager Louis van Gaal said on Schweinsteiger:
"I am truly delighted Bastian is joining Manchester United, his record speaks for itself.
"He is the ultimate professional and there is no doubting his talent and ability to control and dictate games.
"He brings a wealth of experience and is an excellent addition to our squad."
On Schneiderlin, LVG added:
"Morgan is a very talented player with great energy, work rate and ability.
"His skills will complement the players that we already have and I am very pleased that we have been able to complete this deal before the tour to the United States."
The double deal was announced on the day that United jet off to the USA on their pre-season tour, and David De Gea, himself the subject of intense transfer speculation, was among those who boarded the flight at Manchester Airport.
Tour squad: Tyler Blackett, Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, Matteo Darmian, David De Gea, Memphis Depay, Jonny Evans, Maroaune Fellaini, Sean Goss, Ander Herrera, Adnan Januzaj, Sam Johnstone, Phil Jones, Anders Lindegaard, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Paddy McNair, Andreas Pereira, Wayne Rooney, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia, James Wilson and Ashley Young.
