United closing in on Schweinsteiger move

United are close to completing the signing of German international Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich.

I write this post erring on the side of caution- indeed I still feel a tad silly when we somewhat jumped the gun on this very page over Ilkay Gundogan and reported him signing for us only for him to subsequently stay at Dortmund (although in my defence, everyone else was saying it too).

United have been linked with a number of high-profile arrivals this summer, but, should Schweinsteiger arrive at Old Trafford, it would be a significant statement of intent similar to the one we made last summer with the arrivals of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

The 30-year-old is believed to have told Bayern he does not want to extend his contract, and although the two clubs are yet to agree a fee, United are prepared to give the World Cup winner a massive increase in his salary.

Schweinsteiger is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game today.
A box-to-box player with a terrific energy and work rate, his set-piece delivery and reading of the game- as well as his prowess for the spectacular goal or two- would make him a world class addition to this United side (he's also dating Ana Ivanovic so any chance to see more of her at OT is an added bonus).

Although it could be argued that Schweinsteiger is too old to slot into the high tempo, fast paced, intense and frantic world of a Premier League midfield, he is still only 30 and has at least five years at the top level left in him.

United have made only one signing so far this summer- despite being linked with every player under the sun- but Italian full-back Matteo Darmian also appears to be heading to Old Trafford for £13m from Torino.
