Manchester United faced their most testing week for many a year but passed with flying colours as we knocked Barcelona out of Europe and then won the Carabao Cup at Wembley.
It may have 'only' been the League Cup, but it was the first trophy of the season and a chance for Erik ten Hag to collect silverware only nine months into the job at Old Trafford. This will act as a springboard, a launchpad to propel United to further success and you can bet this will be merely the first of many. 

Despite having only two days to prepare in comparison to a week for opponents Newcastle, United controlled the final and won at a relative canter. 

Everything ten Hag touches turns to gold: his substitutions work to perfection, his signings have been brilliant and his mentality monstrous. Up ze Reds!

Here is how each played rated as the team roared to a sixth League Cup success.

David de Gea - 8

Had little to do apart from one low save from Allan Saint-Maximin and a late Joelinton header. The clean sheet ensures he has now eclipsed the legendary Peter Schmeichel as the keeper with the most shutouts in the club's illustrious history. A second League Cup win for our Spanish Dave.

Diogo Dalot - 5

Always looked to have a difficult afternoon in store against the pace and trickery of Saint - Maximin. An early booking didn't help his cause and was given a stern examination by Newcastle's dangerman. Subbed at half time - but he has his first Reds winners medal.

Raphael Varane - 8

A defensive masterclass from the World Cup winner and one of the best defenders in world football. Won everything in the air and was calmness personified. Rolls Royce of a player. 

Lisandro Martinez - 9

Last-ditch challenge on Fabian Schar prevented Newcastle from going ahead. Got kicked in the head twice but epitomises this side with his bravery, courage and ability. One of the signings of the season. Easy to see why he is already a cult hero here.

Luke Shaw - 8

First trophy of his career having missed out on the cup double of 2017 under Jose Mourinho. Crossed superbly for the opener and excelled both defensively and going forward. What a season this man is having. Is there a better left back in the country right now?

Casemiro - 10

Put United ahead with a thumping header and ran the game thereafter. Strong, composed, influential on and off the ball and popped up everywhere. His leadership and winning mentality has permeated through this side. A simply magnificent master of his craft. What a player. The perfect performance.

Fred - 7

Picked up a booking in the first half but controlled the game in a Brazil-centric midfield. Energetic and combative as usual, Fred is a reliable big game player and never lets you down. 

Antony - 6

Toyed with Dan Burn on more than one occasion and linked up well with Dalot. Drifted in and out of the game a bit but is so important to the structure and balance of this team. 

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Absolutely tireless performance as he defied fatigue to cover every blade of grass. He plays 90 minutes three times a week but his level never drops. Neat and tidy without having a seminal impact on the game.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Was an injury doubt coming into the final and United's talismanic figurehead was not at his dynamic and explosive best. That said, he still got his goal and has now won four major honours with his boyhood club. 

Wout Weghorst - 6

A decent performance from the loan frontman. Played a part in the second goal by assisting Rashford and nearly scored himself with a screamer. His best work came from a deeper role - his pressing is relentless and his work rate insatiable. 

Substitutes

Aaron Wan - Bissaka (for Dalot ht) - 8

An absolute colossus against ASM in the second half. Never gave him a sniff, got forward superbly and would be a contender for man of the match had he played the full 90.

Scott McTominay (for Weghorst 69) - 6

Came on to re-energise the midfield and kept things ticking over. Solid if unspectacular

Marcel Sabitzer (for Fred 69) - 7

A very impressive cameo. Came on at a time when Newcastle were pressing and helped to restore the equilibrium. I like the look of him.

Jadon Sancho (for Antony 83) - 6

Had little time to impose himself on the match but made a few darting runs in the closing stages

Harry Maguire (for Rashford 88) - N/A

Came on to lift the trophy but had no time to make an impact

Got everything right with his substitutions, game management and preparation. You simply cannot fault him. Bald is best. 

Player ratings: Several men shine as rampant Reds roar in thrilling derby

 Erik ten Hag's cooking title-winning Reds recorded another famous scalp as Pep Guardiola's faltering City went the same way as Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham in falling victim to this remarkable Reds renaissance.

The Reds were humbled and battered at the Etihad but showed lessons have been learned since that day as United exacted revenge on our local rivals to move within a point of Pep Guardiola's side in the process.

Here is how we rated each Red in a stunning instalment of the 189th Manchester derby.

David de Gea - 6

Had nothing to do as City only had one shot on target in 95 minutes - Jack Grealish's header for the opening goal. Nothing he could do to stop it and, although he would surely have expected to be a very busy goalkeeper, De Gea was a virtual spectator. His opposite number was by far the busier of the two stoppers.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 8

What a turnaround for a man who looked done under Erik ten Hag. A masterful showing from a player reborn and even showed some close control dribbling to set up a United attack on the right wing with United chasing the game.

Raphael Varane - 8

A constant, reassuring presence again at the heart of the defence. Tracked Erling Haaland when he dropped deep and won everything in the air as usual. Didn't put a foot wrong. Rolls Royce of a player.

Luke Shaw - 9

Shaw has gone from an emergency, makeshift centre half to a genuine option for United. Rendered the best striker in the world anonymous and was cynical and combative when he had to be. His huge header to get us out was roared to the rafters late on. 

Tyrell Malacia - 8

I was worried about his battle with Riyad Mahrez but it was one the young Dutchman won comprehensively. United's left-hand side was dominant and Malacia was a big part of that. A complete reversal of his showing in the game at the Etihad.

Casemiro - 7

Perhaps not quite as imperious as he has been with some wayward passing (by his standards) and could have perhaps done better for City's goal as he lost de Bruyne. But he was dogged and buzzed around to help United defend the lead. Still one of the best players on the field even when not at his best. 

Fred - 9

Tasked with shackling de Bruyne and cutting the supply line to Haaland, Fred did his specific role superbly. A lot of us Reds were calling for his inclusion and it worked. Won his duel with the Belgian and whipped the crowd up after two big tackles on de Bruyne. Impressive commitment and proactive play in another excellent derby performance.

Christian Eriksen - 5

Pushed into the no.10 role, he was neat and tidy in the first half and linked play well. But United lost control in midfield after the break and the game passed him by.

Bruno Fernandes - 8

Led by example and was at the heart of everything the Reds did. Perhaps should have scored in the first half but then did so - albeit in a contentious fashion - for the game-changing moment. 

Marcus Rashford - 8

Overcame an injury concern as he came to life to effectively 'create' the equaliser before he kept his incredible run going with yet another winner. 16 now in the season of this player's life. 

Anthony Martial - 5

Held the ball up well and did link the play effectively but he was an injury doubt before the game and it showed. Came off at half-time and was very lackadaisical. Does Wout Weghorst start ahead of him now?

Subs: Antony - for Martial ht - 5

Won a couple of corners and did some good defensive work but didn't offer too much

Alejandro Garnacho - for Eriksen 71 - 7

What a difference he made when he came on. United were losing their grip on the game and Garnacho helped to restore the equilibrium. Set up Rashford to send Old Trafford into delirium.

Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool player ratings: Martinez, Varane and Malacia shine

 Manchester United's season roared into life with an improbable victory over Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at a raucous Old Trafford.

It was a result no-one saw coming on a night which could prove seminal, despite being only three games into the new Premier League season. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford put United 2-0 ahead and despite a late Mo Salah goal to set up a nervous finale, there can be little argument over the result.

Here is how each Red rated on a memorable night at Old Trafford.

David de Gea - 7

Could have sat in with the fans for the first hour but made good saves from Fabinho and Roberto Firmino after half-time. Nothing he could have done to prevent Salah scoring. Good hands and a good command of his area were notable assets to his game.

Diogo Dalot - 8

Tenacious, brave and not far from faultless in his duel with Luis Diaz. Dalot limited the Colombian's attacking output and showed a willingness to get forward. Did well defensively too and showed maturity to keep his head whilst on a booking.

Raphael Varane - 9

Simply colossal at the back. Perverse he was left out in the first two games when he is United's best centre back by a distance. Won everything in the air and into feet, he was strong, vocal and organised a young defence imperiously. A Rolls Royce of a player. Magnificent.

Lisandro Martinez - 9

Has had his critics but silenced them superbly in a brilliant, no nonsense showing from minute one to 90. Let Salah know he was there with a crunching challenge after 30 seconds and never let up. Saved a certain own goal, won every duel and turned in probably the best defensive display you will see all season. He has arrived in the Premier League. Sensational. 

Tyrell Malacia - 8

What a game for the young full-back to be thrown into for his full debut, but he did not disappoint. Tough and brave in the tackle, quick, strong, and pocketed Salah throughout. United's only bright spot in the debacle at Brentford and even showed he can take a set piece. Luke Shaw isn't getting his place back any time soon on this evidence. Brilliant.

Scott McTominay - 6

In front of the watching Casemiro, the Scot was by no means unerring but put in a vastly improved performance. Played a defence-splitting through ball to tee up Fernandes in the move from which Elanga struck the post. Helped United to get hold of the midfield although he was a little loose in possession at times and seemed to tire late on.

Christian Eriksen - 7

Good again. Calm and composed on the ball as always, nearly scored from a set piece and set the tone with his energy and driving runs. Played a part in the opening goal when he found Elanga to set up Sancho and had worked tirelessly when he was taken off late on.

Jadon Sancho - 8

His best performance at United so far? Sancho popped up everywhere in the United attack, he was brimming with menace and held Liverpool at his sway. A wonderful opener sent the Reds on their way  and Liverpool's uncharacteristically shaky back line couldn't deal with him. Got to keep this level up now.

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Linked the play well and unlucky not to score himself. Regressed slightly but his best performance for ages. The Portuguese playmaker was United's midfield metronome and did everything right in the first half. Almost scored an unfortunate own goal and picked up a poor booking for diving but a real captain's performance and showed leadership to help United see the game through.

Anthony Elanga - 6

Unlucky to be subbed at half time as he hit the post when he perhaps should have scored, and set up Sancho for the opener. Gave Alexander - Arnold problems in the first half and played his part with good energy and industry in United's impressive showing. 

Marcus Rashford - 8

This was Rashford at his brilliant best in a vintage performance for the ages. Barged Alexander - Arnold out the way early on, ran in behind tirelessly and looked fit and firing from start to finish. Led the line impressively and capped off an effervescent performance with a superbly taken goal. This was Rashford's best performance in a long, long time. A late mazy run in the second half showed the level of confidence and morale is the highest it has been for a while.

Anthony Martial (for Elanga ht) - 7

The mercurial Frenchman's link up play with Rashford and Sancho caught the eye in pre-season and it was in evidence again here. Held the ball up superbly, put a shift in and set up Rashford for the game clinching second goal. Martial did brilliantly when he came on and his return gives United, and ten Hag, options up top. 

Fred (for Sancho 71) - 6

Brought on to shore up the midfield but Liverpool got a foothold in the game. Erred in his passing although did provide tenacity. It looks as though the Brazilian will suffer in terms of game time when his compatriot Casemiro gets up to speed.

Cristiano Ronaldo (for Rashford 86) - N/A

Came on late and skied a volley. A big call dropping him to the bench but it worked. Had no impact and is his role now as an impact sub?

Donny van de Beek (for Eriksen 86) - N/A

Helped run the clock down and could have had an assist for Martial but failed to make an impact in his few minutes on the field.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka (for Dalot 86) - N/A

First minutes of the season as ten Hag put the right-back on to offer late solidity and reliability down the right. 

Manager - Erik ten Hag - 9

This is what he was appointed for. Showed bravery in his team selection which paid off and got everything right. On a night when his United tenure truly had lift off, the Dutchman will be delighted with his team. 

Brentford 1-3 Man Utd ratings: Dalot and Varane star as Reds win again

Ralf Rangnick's Reds turned on the style - and the power - in our best performance under the interim boss despite a first half scare in the capital.
On our first visit to Brentford for 75 years, United were indebted to David de Gea but eventually prevailed through three Academy graduates to move to within two points of Saturday's opponents West Ham with a game in hand.

Here is how each Red rated at the Brentford Community Stadium.

David de Gea - 8

Made three superb - if relatively routine - saves in the first half in a compelling battle with the Bees Mathias Jensen. United could have gone under - the fact they didn't was largely down to De Gea. Had nothing to do after half-time.

Diogo Dalot - 9

A magnificent performance from one of Rangnick's most trusted lieutenants. Excellent both in defence and attack, he won everything down his flank and when called upon to repel Brentford's aerial bombardment. Quick, strong, composed and stylish, Dalot was simply immense here. On this evidence, Aaron Wan - Bissaka's never getting his place back. My MotM. 

Victor Lindelof - 6

This always looked a tough test for him under the high ball and against Brentford's talented and talismanic striker Ivan Toney. Lindelof looked ill at ease in the face of what, at times, represented an onslaught but got better in the second half.

Raphael Varane - 9

Solid and dependable, Varane kept his head where others may have wilted. Good with and without the ball, it's the simple things he does so well. A purring Rolls Royce of a player. Class.

Alex Telles - 6

Did nothing wrong but nothing special either. Muted as an attacking force and with him on corners is it any wonder we haven't scored from one for about 5,000 years?

Scott McTominay - 8

Struggled at times under the Brentford intensity and press, but McTominay grew into the game on his return to the side and was involved in the second goal when he won the ball high up the pitch. Industrial and energetic as usual, United's midfield always looks better with him in it. Let's hope his injury is nothing major

Fred - 6

Quiet and regressed from a creditable showing at Villa but picked the lock well for Anthony Elanga. Like so many, improved hugely in the second half.

Mason Greenwood - 7

Drifted in and out of the game but stuck at it and was rewarded with his first league goal since mid October when he capped off a superb team move. 

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Tried too hard and loses possession a lot as a result but got on the ball more in the second half to pull the strings and followed up his brace at Villa with two assists here. Ended the game up top and there are signs he's returning to form.

Anthony Elanga - 7

Touted as United's next big thing and it's been great to see him rewarded with a run in the side. All three goals were scored by Academy graduates and the young Swede got the ball rolling with a nice finish - only his second ever senior goal. Rangnick seems to like him and he kept going despite some rough house treatment at times.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 6

Hit the bar and his magnificent chest play teed up Fernandes for the second. Got crowded out and found it tough going, his night overshadowed with a temper tantrum having been hooked.

Harry Maguire - for Ronaldo 71 - 6

Came on into a back three to help shore things up and - unlike Saturday - enable his side to see the game through.

Player ratings: Man Utd 3-2 Atalanta - Fernandes and Ronaldo shine

Never in doubt!

Cristiano Ronaldo headed the winner as Manchester United completed a dramatic, climb-off-the-canvas comeback to turn a thrilling Champions League tie on its head and go top of Group F. 

In truth, United could and should have been out of sight by half-time having fallen 0-2 behind but missed a hatful of chances. Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back before captain Harry Maguire levelled to set the stage for that man Ronaldo to send Old Trafford wild. 

Here is how we rated each Red on a heart-stopping night in M16. Viva Ronaldo!

David de Gea - 7

Had relatively little to do and wasn't to blame for either goal. His magnificent double save at 1-2 surely kept us in the tie. If either go in, it's game over. How pivotal it proved to be

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 7

Contributed little at either end but seemed to get better as the tie went on. Surged forward superbly in the second half onslaught.

Harry Maguire - 6

Showed leadership and courage in the second half and popped up with a captain's goal to level. Could have perhaps done more to prevent the Mario Pasalic opener.

Victor Lindelof - 5

Looked very much like the third choice centre-back he now is. Got bullied by Luis Muriel and was spun too often. A below par showing from the Swede. 

Luke Shaw - 7

Caught out on the corner for the second goal but redeemed himself with a worldie of a cross for Ronaldo's coup de grace.

Scott McTominay - 5

Thumped the post at 1-2 but couldn't get near Pasalic and was hooked after an hour as United looked to chase the game.

Fred - 6

Played with his usual insatiable energy, tested Juan Musso and should have scored just before half-time. His passing was typically sloppy but actually had one of his better games

Mason Greenwood - 5

Pressed high and well early on but faded to the fringes even as the Reds took the upper hand. The 20-year-old has been our best player this season but struggled here.

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Poor in the first half but, like so many, came alive after the interval. Set up Rashford with a filthy assist to start the revival and put the cross in for his captain to equalise. Even when not at his best, his impact is seminal

Marcus Rashford - 6

Looked lively and back to full fitness but squandered two good chances and struck the bar when he should have scored. Came off with a knock after a nice finish

Cristiano Ronaldo - 8

Created chances for Fred and Rashford and should have scored himself before he was there to meet Shaw's cross. A player made for nights like this. Viva Ronaldo! Siuuuuu

Relentless work rate, ran his nuts off and might claim an assist for Maguire as he got a flick on Fernandes' cross

Manchester derby ratings: Shaw and Martial magnificent as United shock City

United painted Manchester a glorious shade of magnificent red as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side turned the form book on its head to stop City in their tracks and end their 21-match winning run.
After three successive goalless draws, including a dire stalemate at Palace, United had come in for criticism but dispelled those doubters in spectacular style with a derby day showing for the ages as Solskjaer earned a fourth victory over his illustrious opposite number Pep Guardiola. 

Here, we take a look at how each Red rated as United defied the odds again to secure a famous victory in the 185th all-Manchester meeting

Dean Henderson - 8

Given his big chance with David de Gea on paternity leave, Henderson was commanding, vocal and made one excellent save in particular to deny Ilkay Gundogan. He may have expected to find himself a man under siege, but, curiously, had hardly anything to do in the face of United's all-conquering neighbours. He didn't quite register an assist but Shaw's goal came from his throw - out, something you feel De Gea just wouldn't do. Henderson did his prospects of becoming number one no harm at all.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 8

Seems to save his best form for the visit to the Etihad and the challenge of Raheem Sterling. The latter seems to have a mental block when it comes to getting the better of the Spider. Wan - Bissaka barely gave his rival a sniff all game, winning every challenge, making numerous important interceptions and had his side of the pitch in his own form of lockdown. Immense.

Harry Maguire - 9

Dominant in the air against one of the best attacks in Europe, strong, brave in commanding and leading a high line. Produced a number of hugely important clearances and, bar a booking, barely put a foot wrong. This was a captain's performance from a man having a quietly impressive season. His yellow card was clumsy and the only reason why he hasn't got a perfect score here. Colossal.

Victor Lindelof - 9

Lindelof was the main selection question from Solskjaer, as many of us felt Eric Bailly should have been picked alongside Maguire. But the Swede more than justified his inclusion with an impressive performance. Solskjaer likes Lindelof's composure and passing ability from deep and he certainly showed here that he is a man for the big occasion. Read City's attacks brilliantly, got stuck in, and limited a world class attack to barely anything of note. Courageous and confident on the ball, he had a brilliant game and tends to save his best performances for the elite. 

Luke Shaw - 9

A superb goal capped another absolutely magnificent performance from a player in the midst of a world class season. A constant menace down the left, he was excellent both in defence and attack and never stopped running. The goal will be the highlight of his career and won the battle with Riyad Mahrez at a canter. This tie was deemed as a duel between Shaw and City counterpart Joao Cancelo, but there was only one winner. What a player and what a performance from the best left-back in the country by a distance right now. An England recall surely beckons. 

Scott McTominay - 7

Nothing flashy but did his job well, excelling at the nitty gritty and frustrating City. He was loose in possession early on but got better and was tireless in closing down space and trying to break up play. He got forward well, linked the play and proved a nuisance for the hosts as he buzzed around in midfield to disrupt City's pretty passing patterns. Crucial in games like this one.

Fred - 7

Pressed superbly as the little Brazilian played with his trademark energy and industry. A little sloppy at times but grew into the game and cut off the passing lanes for De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. Didn't do too much with the ball but his work off it was invaluable. Hassled and harried with guts and tenacity.

Dan James - 7

James drifted in and out of the game but his work rate and running off the ball laid the platform for United's counter-attacking masterclass. He provided excellent support for Wan - Bissaka and tracked back tirelessly to help his right-back shackle Sterling. He looked to push Zinchenko wide and free up space for Fernandes and Rashford between the full-back and centre-backs. James has been in good form recently and did well here as he gave us an outlet. His raw pace gave City problems. 

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Putting his hands to his ears, Fernandes was very much aware of the questions surrounding his efficiency against the top sides. He put United ahead with an early penalty, pressed excellently and recovered the ball eight times in the first half with his work rate and energy. He proved he can deliver when it matters, dispatching the spot-kick and providing a platform for United to build from. 

Marcus Rashford - 7

Rashford has come in for criticism of late but will have silenced them here with an excellent performance, his best showing for ages. Nearly scored early on and, on another day, could have had a hat-trick. Dovetailed superbly with Shaw down the left and led the charge on the counter, getting an assist for Shaw when he teed up the crucial second goal. Clearly struggling with injury at times, and had to go off with an ankle problem after tireless work off the ball. Played a part in the opening goal too and Solskjaer will hope his injury is nothing too serious.

Anthony Martial - 9

Recalled to the starting line-up with Edinson Cavani injured, Martial gets my vote for man of the match. Ran Ruben Dias and John Stones ragged, he held the ball up, worked the channels magnificently, led the charge on the counter and linked the play brilliantly. Won the penalty. City couldn't get near him at times, typified when Rodri and Stones clattered against him as he spun and raced away - the mercurial Frenchman at his explosive and dynamic best. Should have scored with a good chance to make it 3-0 but a goal was the only thing missing from an otherwise nearly faultless performance from Martial. He was absolutely magnificent and terrorised City in a way no one has done for ages. He needed a big performance and had one here.

Mason Greenwood - for Rashford 73 - 6

What a player to put on when the opposition are chasing the game and leaving gaps in behind them. Greenwood did his bit, and ran the channels with energy when United countered. He wasn't able to make the most of the space he had, but he worked hard and linked well with James on the left.

Brandon Williams - for Fernandes 90 - N/A

Manager - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 9

Solskjaer caught City and Guardiola by surprise with a high press from the very first minute, instructing the side to ruin the hosts passing game with a high energy counter attacking performance. By the end, United were doing more than that - actually dominating the game and forcing City to the fringes. It worked impressively well as he took his record against Guardiola to four wins, one draw and three defeats. 

Player ratings: Fernandes and Fred shine in excellent team performance

 Manchester United put the tie to bed at the halfway stage of this Europa League last 32 contest with a stunning showing against Real Sociedad of La Liga.
Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Marcus Rashford and Dan James also got in on the act to put United out of sight ahead and render next week's return at Old Trafford a glorified training match. 

Sociedad are a very good side so to beat them 4-0 - in truth it could and should have been more - is a very good result and allows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to rest the entire first team for the second game at Old Trafford, coming as it does three days before our trip to Stamford Bridge.

Dean Henderson - 7

Had very little to do bar one early save with his evening restricted to strong aerial handling and impressive distribution. Played a part in the third goal as he started the counter attack and exuded confidence and authority. What he had to do, he did well. This was Henderson's second European start after the nightmare of Istanbul as he helped to secure a clean sheet. Henderson will start in the second game at Old Trafford. 

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 7

Perhaps could have been rested and almost certainly will be for the second leg. Booked early on but recovered well for a solid evening, getting forward to support the attack and played a part in the fourth goal with a good run from right-back. Nothing special but did his job effectively in a good team performance

Harry Maguire - 7

It looked like it would be a busy night for the skipper in the first five minutes, but improved after a few shaky moments and made a critical lunging block at 1-0. Predictably beaten in a foot race against quick forwards but was solid and authoritative, and made two great clearances under pressure. Looked better and far more assured alongside Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly - 6

A calamitous and chaotic opening spell where he fell over and then got skinned twice. But, to his credit, the Ivorian recovered well and made some good recovery tackles. Claimed an assist for the fourth goal on his return to the side and gained in confidence and stature as the tie wore on. Should have done enough to keep his place for Newcastle on Sunday.

Alex Telles - 8

Did well on his last outing against West Ham and was superb again here. Shackled ex-Red Adnan Januzaj expertly and was superb both in defence and attack. Telles was unconvincing in his early days at United but has really improved and this was probably his best showing in Red. Picked up a knock but played the full 90 and has proved a very capable understudy for Luke Shaw.

Scott McTominay - 8

Another totemic performance that illustrated his growing importance. Given licence to bomb forward and did so to excellent effect. Should have scored and was unlucky not to do so in a supreme box-to-box showing. Efficient in everything he did and drove the team forward from deep. A doubt coming into the game, he was replaced on the hour mark to keep him fresh ahead of Newcastle's visit to Old Trafford on Sunday. Undroppable at the moment. 

Fred - 8

Tidy as always in possession but added an attacking threat to his game and his lovely defence-splitting pass for Marcus Rashford epitomised a brilliant individual performance. Diligent and hard-working, Fred provided balance and his defensive nous allowed McTominay to drive forward whilst the little Brazilian sat and marshalled superbly. Like a traffic warden, Fred has become Solskjaer's go to man in games like this one and, on this showing, it's easy to see why. I thought Fred was poor at West Brom but bounced back here. 

Dan James - 7

A somewhat surprise inclusion in Solskjaer's team and drifted in and out of the tie. James scored against Southampton last time out and looked dangerous on the counter-attack, particularly in the second half as a tiring Sociedad side left space. Had a goal disallowed and was twice denied by Alex Remiro before he capped a good individual performance with a goal late on, an excellent finish on the angle having burst clear. Has had some criticism but certainly will have silenced some of those here.

Bruno Fernandes - 9

Where on earth would Manchester United be without this man - surely the best no.10 on the planet and the talismanic, inspirational, string pulling heartbeat of Solskjaer's United. Put United ahead with a finish more difficult than it looked and then showed the predatory instincts of a striker for his and our second - his 21st goal of a magnificent season. Quite simply a world class talent at the peak of his powers. Sociedad couldn't get near him and he gave a footballing lesson. The best player on the pitch by a considerable distance. When the end of the season awards come around, this man won't be far away. What a player and what a signing. Should watch the second leg from the comfort of home as he won't be needed. Magnificent.

Marcus Rashford - 7

Profligate in the first half and missed two sitters before he finally got his goal. The wrong man in the right place as he wasted three gilt-edged openings, but made good runs, linked the play well and had a key role in both Fernandes goals. Good movement and caused problems for the Spaniards despite his erratic night in front of goal. A mixed performance from him. 

Mason Greenwood  - 8

Despite the fact he didn't score, Greenwood certainly deserved to get a goal and continued his recent upturn in form. Deployed in his favourite position up top, Greenwood did his bit defensively to snuff out an opening for Monreal and even headed clear several dangerous crosses before half-time. Looked to have assisted James only for the offside flag to decide otherwise. An excellent performance of maturity and patience, he was unlucky not to score himself as he was twice denied by Remiro. He may not be banging them in, but Mason has been a man in fine fettle of late and looks to have recovered from his blip earlier in the season. He was unfortunate to be dropped to the bench at the Hawthorns and there were signs he's getting back to somewhere near his best level.

Nemanja Matic - for McTominay 60 - 6

Allowed McTominay a breather and was relatively untroubled as he kept us ticking over. Made an important clearance soon after coming on and used his experience to snuff out danger on a couple of occasions. Nothing spectacular and was solid.

Anthony Martial - for Rashford 68 - 5

Came on for the rested Rashford and would have fancied getting himself a goal but it didn't quite happen for him. Had a few nice touches but was unable to replicate the brilliance of his attacking colleagues.

Juan Mata - for Bruno Fernandes 82 - 5

Made his first appearance since the FA Cup game against Watford ages ago. Replaced Fernandes as Solskjaer gave some of his fringe players some valuable minutes. Fernandes won't be needed for the second leg so Mata can look forward to a rare start at Old Trafford.

Amad Diallo - for Greenwood 82 - 6

Didn't get long to impose himself but made a couple of darting runs and could have grabbed a debut goal had James cut the ball back instead of going for goal. Did well and - given the fact the tie is over as a contest - should get his first start in the second leg. 

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 9

I liked what he did with his team selection here - a side strong enough to win the game and respect good opposition but he rested some key men with the league in mind. It was pleasing that we kept attacking and didn't simply sit on the 2-0 to see the game out. Got everything right and oversaw an excellent result and performance. I want to see everyone rested at Old Trafford. 

Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool: Player ratings - Rashford and Shaw excel as United go through

 Manchester United are through to the FA Cup fifth round after knocking out Liverpool in a superb cup tie at Old Trafford. 
After a sterile stalemate in the league at Anfield last week, these two old rivals served up a classic for the ages as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United prevailed in a five-goal thriller to set up a last 16 tie with West Ham. 

It was Solskjaer's first win over Jurgen Klopp in another notable scalp for the Reds manager. Here, we look at who starred and who struggled at Old Trafford.

Dean Henderson - 7

Powerless to prevent the opener but perhaps could have done better for Salah's second as the ball went underneath him. Cleared his lines well and made two good saves from Trent Alexander - Arnold and the hat-trick hunting Egyptian, the latter at 2-2 and with Liverpool getting on top, A save that was crucial in eventual victory. Did his job.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 7

Liverpool got no change down his flank and that was down to the solidity and resilience of Wan - Bissaka. Linked up well with Paul Pogba and got forward well, bursting forward to support the attack and got a couple of good crosses in. His passing was a little negligible at times. AWB would benefit from some competition at right-back. 

Harry Maguire - 6

Just doesn't look as commanding or as comfortable as he does alongside Eric Bailly. At fault for the second goal when he got caught in possession trying to pass out. Struggled to keep tabs on the forwards but there were some good clearances and some key blocks. Didn't do much wrong but not fantastic either. 

Victor Lindelof - 6

Not particularly good but not particularly bad either. Hardly put a foot wrong at Anfield but got caught out of position for Salah's opener. Struggled against the movement and guile of Roberto Firmino and lost the ball quite easily on occasions. At fault for the first goal. Doesn't look confident and remains a worry. 

Luke Shaw - 9

Perhaps a bit of a surprise starter, but the best player on the pitch again by a considerable distance. He is playing at a phenomenal level right now. Possibly partly responsible for Salah's opener but it's fair to say he redeemed himself with a stunning performance as he linked with Rashford, overlapped and stormed forward at will. Defensively good, magnificent going forward and added an end product with a series of testing crosses. Deserves an England recall. Never stopped running and outshone his more illustrious full-back compatriots. 

Scott McTominay - 6

Caught in possession more than once but grew into the game and looked better when Fred came on. Shielded the centre-backs well and his work rate was key in tracking the runners and recycling the ball. Had a couple of decent openings but played in a deeper role than normal and got found wanting. 

Paul Pogba - 7

Quiet by recent standards but showed flashes of form and put a shift in. A slightly different job here in a spoiling role rather than all-action attack. Played a part in our equaliser as he won the ball that started the move to culminate in Greenwood's leveller. Diligent and disciplined, this was another quietly effective showing - but the BBC's decision to give him man of the match seemed an odd one. 

Mason Greenwood - 7

Scored for the first time in ten games with a trademark run, touch and finish inside the box. A strike he badly needed and looked back to his best at times. Got an assist, too, albeit a fortuitous one as Rhys Williams should have dealt with Greenwood's ball in behind. Unlucky to be taken off at 2-2 and with United in need of a goal, but looked a threat on the break even if he did drift in and out of the tie at times. 

Donny van de Beek - 5

Awarded a rare start but did nothing to justify the outcry over his lack of game time. Slowed the game down, looked rusty and was always on the periphery despite his role in the first goal. Too safe on the ball,  and you struggle to see what he offers. Had a few bright moments but faded to the fringes and was hooked shortly after the hour. A disappointing day. 

Marcus Rashford - 8

Looked far more comfortable stationed in his more favoured position on the left. Terrorised Liverpool all day with a stunning pass for Greenwood's opener and a thumping, wonderfully composed finish for the second. Caused Trent Alexander - Arnold no end of problems with his pace and direct running. Back to his best. Looked to have picked up a knock in the second half. Excellent.

Edinson Cavani - 7

Although he was generally starved of service and didn't get involved in the penalty box too much, the veteran Uruguayan provides a focal point and a presence that the other strikers simply don't, or can't. Struck the post with a late header and ran himself into the ground with an immense work rate. Showed his importance despite not getting on the scoresheet. Still awaiting his first Old Trafford goal but used his experience to earn the free-kick for the winner when Fabinho scythed him down. 

Subs - Fred (for Greenwood, 66 mins) - 7

Combative, energetic and helped United wrest control of the midfield at a time when Liverpool were coming on strong. United's attacking impetus was notably stronger and improved when the little Brazilian came on. Sadio Mane should have perhaps been sent off for his reckless lunge on him, but it was a good call from Solskjaer despite the need for a goal. Must be a pain in the backside to play against. 

Bruno Fernandes (for van de Beek, 66 mins) - 8

Given a much-needed rest as he started the game on the bench, he wasn't on the pitch for long but his impact grows ever more seminal. Often criticised for not showing up in the biggest of the games, that wasn't the case here with a majestic free-kick to decide the tie. A sensational late cross for Cavani should have given him an assist. The spark, the fire-starter, the talismanic figurehead. What a player. Curled home the free-kick like a penalty. 

Anthony Martial (for Rashford, 86 mins) - N/A

No rating. Came on to hold the ball up and to get United out. Not on long enough

Player ratings vs Liverpool: Defence excellent but attack struggles

 Manchester United remained top of the Premier League after a goalless draw at Anfield in the 205th competitive meeting between the sides. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will be content with a point but will also feel one point could have been three.
Here, we run the rule over those in Red (or, more accurately, gray), as we retained both our leadership of the league and our points advantage over the out-of-form champions. 

David de Gea - 6

You would expect a very busy afternoon for an opposing goalkeeper at Anfield, but this curiously wasn't the case with most of the Spaniard's work coming from long-range pot shots and clearing his lines. Had Roberto Firmino not left his shooting boots at home, De Gea would have been troubled more but, as it was, he had very little to do. Made one good stop to deny Thiago from distance in the second half. 

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 7

Shackled Sadio Mane with trademark tenacity and had a few moments going forward. Perhaps could have conceded a penalty in a clash with Salah late on, but dealt with Mane and Robertson - probably the best left flank in the country - with diligence. Typically solid, nothing flashy but good in the tackle and, as usual, excellent when one-on-one. 

Victor Lindelof - 8

Surprisingly and somewhat contentiously picked ahead of the recently excellent Eric Bailly, Lindelof justified his selection with a magnificent showing. Seemed drawn to the ball like a magnet, and made a sensational, colossal, match-saving clearance with ten minutes to go and Roberto Firmino set to pounce. The thought of his and Maguire's lack of pace against two of the quickest forwards in the league terrified me, but fair play to Solskjaer for getting this selection right. Fair play to the Iceman too for an excellent performance. 

Harry Maguire - 8

A few shaky moments and lost the ball needlessly once or twice, but good in the air, organised well and generally solid. If you're a centre-back and you get a clean sheet at Anfield, you will always get a good rating. Having been superb alongside Bailly in recent weeks, Lindelof coming back in did not hinder Maguire at all. In fact, this was one of the best games the two have had together in a pair at the back. 

Luke Shaw - 10 

A sensational, virtuoso masterclass and the best player on the pitch by a considerable distance. Shut down Mo Salah and later Mane magnificently and linked the play brilliantly to create our two best chances with overlapping runs. This was probably Shaw's best ever game in the Red of United. Magnificent in defence and attack, he was absolutely flawless. Cleared everything, never missed a tackle, made six interceptions and never stopped running. A dominant and decisive man of the match showing. A player in the finest of fettles and shone like a beacon amidst a galaxy of stars. 

Scott McTominay - 7

Over-run and outmuscled by Thiago in early stages as his opposite number dictated the play and set the tempo. Could McTominay perhaps have done better to shut down the Spaniard? Maybe, but to his credit he grew into the game and himself started to pull the strings as United's midfield held their own. Dropped into the back four when out of possession and had a couple of surging runs forward. The ultimate big-game player, his importance is evident for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 

Fred - 6

Solid if unspectacular, Fred looked a little flustered at times under Liverpool's high press. This was a middling performance - nothing amazing but nothing awful. His usual consistent self, combative and put a shift in. Never gives anything less than his all, he was tireless and his composure improved as the game went on. Very similar in style to his cohort McTominay, the pair are perfect partners against top class sides. 

Paul Pogba - 6

Stationed wide on the right, this was a bits and pieces performance from the Pog. Having put in a man of the match showing at Burnley in midweek, Pogba looks noticeably happier, working hard for the team and putting a shift in despite his unfamiliar position. Covered for Wan - Bissaka and opened Liverpool up with some good passing. Smashed straight at Alisson in our best opening. Anonymous at times, influential at others. 

Bruno Fernandes - 5

Billed as United's most important player and touted as the key to Anfield victory, Fernandes was disappointing. On his first appearance against Liverpool, he often tried too hard and snatched at anything meaningful. His contributions ranged from the profligate to the sloppy via the over-ambitious. Went close with a free-kick and did get involved in the game, but should have done better with his late effort from a Shaw pull-back. Reacted petulantly after getting subbed to sum up his worst game for a while. 

Marcus Rashford - 3

Showed naivety, indiscipline and a baffling lack of understanding with the offside flag, getting caught out four times before the interval. Devoid of quality and influence, he failed to play in Cavani when three on two, his shooting was wasteful and he was anonymous. Played as the furthest man forward before Cavani came on, but failed to make the most of it. Had a shocker. 

Anthony Martial - 4

Ineffective from the left, Martial did nothing to suggest he should be our starting no.9. An injury doubt coming into the tie, this was a tepid and anonymous showing. There was one fleeting first half moment when he burst clear and threw in a nutmeg, but failed to build on that and was hooked for Cavani after an hour. Failed to fire and didn't do enough to test Liverpool's makeshift centre-halves.

Subs - Edinson Cavani - for Martial, 60 mins - 5

Showed some nice touches and offered something different as a focal point of the attack. But United never quite managed to get him in the game and he often dropped deep to collect the ball. 

Mason Greenwood - for Fernandes 89 - N/A

Came on for a fuming Fernandes late on. No rating.

PSG 1-2 Man Utd: Player ratings

 Manchester United opened Group H with a famous, improbable victory to get off to the perfect start in the Champions League's group of death. PSG must be sick of the sight of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United after lightning did indeed strike twice.

 In the wake of a huge. monumental victory against all the odds - no one gave us a chance - there were some immense individual performances. Here, we run the rule over United's eleven heroes at the Parc des Prince.

David de Gea - 9

United's Spanish stopper was back to his brilliant best. A lot like his manager Solskjaer, De Gea often produces his best when he's under the greatest pressure. Facing the best attack in world football, De Gea made a string of stunning saves, notably from Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria, to keep the Parisians at bay. His best save came from the explosive young Frenchman in the second half, with a full length save to push his effort round the post. Solskjaer has kept faith with De Gea, and the keeper had repaid him spectacularly.

Axel Tuanzebe - 10

What a performance! Tuanzebe, on his first United appearance for ten months, was simply magnificent, colossal, heroic. On Europe's biggest stage, the young defender was tasked with shackling Kylian Mbappe and Neymar and rose to the challenge magnificently. He looked like he'd never been away. Arguably the best player on the pitch, Tuanzebe marshalled the defence heroically, won everything in the air, made every tackle, and forced his illustrious opponents down blind alleys. He last played against Colchester in December 2019 but yet you'd never know it. A stunning performance from a brilliant player. Is he the answer to United's defensive issues? A coming of age showing from the top drawer.

Victor Lindelof - 8

This was Lindelof's best performance for a long, long, long time. In fact, it was even maybe his best ever showing in the red (zebra) of United. Commanding, physical and uncompromising, Lindelof held the defence together, helped Tuanzebe, his positioning was superb and Lindelof never put a foot wrong. Has been much maligned but saves his best for the big occasion. The Iceman kept his cool in the firepit.

Luke Shaw - 7

Shaw showed that he can be good as a third centre-back and slotted back into that role with ease here. Despite not been tasked to attack as much as often, Shaw still went forward when possible and linked well with Telles. Played in Anthony Martial to earn the penalty from which Bruno Fernandes scored, did his job well and shackled Di Maria well. Made a couple of excellent tackles and didn't shirk responsibility. 

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 9

Dealt with PSG's much vaunted attacking trio brilliantly throughout. Never gave Neymar a moment, winning tackles, pushing him back and defended heroically. Didn't go forward as much as he at Newcastle, but this was a different remit entirely. There was one last-ditch challenge on Moise Kean that seemed to defy gravity and logic. A man who to be rediscovering his best form. Lived up to his nickname of the Spider. It almost seemed like there was... two Bissaka's. 

Fred - 9

An absolute colossus, Fred was huge, magnificent and heroic. Crunched in on Di Maria early (a bonus point for that), linked the play superbly and harried PSG into submission. Worked tirelessly throughout, he was pugnacious, tenacious, pressed high and rendered PSG's star studded midfield almost anonymous. Fred is not the most spectacular of players but does his job well, he's perfect for these types of games and showed why he can be so crucial. A wonderful showing from the little Brazilian.

Scott McTominay - 8

Dovetailed superbly with Fred. McTominay covered every blade of grass, he was aggressive, energetic and made Neymar realise he was in a match from the first moment. Suffocated and stifled PSG, started attacks from deep and came close to scoring. Used his physically and robust approach to superb effect, making life difficult for Mbappe and co. A quietly impressive performance from the Scot, who replicated his performance in this fixture from 2019. Apparently played with one eye having lost a contact lens. 

Alex Telles - 7

Too early to judge United's new Brazilian, but  it looks like United might have an excellent new signing. Telles looked good and created the most chances out of everyone on the pitch. United have a full-back who plays like an out and out winger. He seems to be adept at crossing and from set pieces. Particularly impressive in the first half, Telles didn't look overawed and was unlucky to be replaced. A fine debut. Linked up with Fernandes brilliantly

Bruno Fernandes - 8

Had the bottle and elite mentality to dispatch his penalty at the second time of asking after Keylor Navas saved his first effort. His delivery caused issues throughout, he worked his socks off and linked play superbly. Fernandes was a little wasteful at times but always tried to make things happen. Fernandes could have had a hat-trick and was involved in the winning goal. Dovetailed well with Telles and the two strikers. Drifted in and out of the game at times, but led the side well and looked captaincy material. Taken off late on.

Marcus Rashford - 9

United's hero in Paris for the second time in as many years, repeating history with a famous, iconic, ice-cool late winner. Rashford had missed several good chances but tucked away his most difficult opening late on. Had dangerous moments but looked to have cost United victory with his profligacy until his late intervention. This lad loves scoring in Paris. Not only is Marcus Rashford MBE adept at feeding kids and standing up to government, he's not too shabby at scoring late winners in Paris either. 

Anthony Martial - 6

Had good moments as he caused problems for PSG in the first half and won the penalty from which Fernandes put United ahead. Returned to the fold in the midst of a domestic suspension, but never got going and looked to have cost the Reds victory with an inexplicable own goal. Martial headed into his own net in the second half, and never really got going. It's not been the start to the season the Frenchman would have wanted and he was out of tune in his native homeland.

Paul Pogba - for Telles 65 - 7

Came on for Telles as Solskjaer went to a back four and deployed Pogba in a diamond. Pogba bought about a control in midfield, and added an extra dimension to the Reds attack. Got forward well, did his bit defensively and set up the winner for Rashford. Created chances and made a good block. A good cameo

Dan James - for Martial  88 - N/A

No time to make an impact.

Donny van de Beek - for Fernandes 88 - N/A

Deserved more than two minutes, I'd like to see more of the Dutchman but who do you drop? Had little time to make an impact but kept United nice and tight and kept things ticking over

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 10

Solskjaer has had his critics but he was brave, bold and his tactics paid off. A masterpiece from the United manager as he fought fire with fire, outgunned arguably the best side in the world and got his rewards. At the scene of his greatest managerial triumph, Ole came out on top again. He's very good in games like these. 

Player ratings: Leicester City 0-2 Man Utd

Manchester United will play in next season's Champions League after a tense but decisive victory at top four rivals Leicester.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side won 2-0 at the King Power through goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard to seal third place at the expense of Brendan Rodgers badly faltering Foxes.

Here, we run the rule over those in Red after our 38th and final Premier League game of a protracted 2019-20 campaign.

David de Gea - 6

Relatively untroubled and made one good save from Harvey Barnes in the second half with the game on a knife edge. That said, the Spaniard still provided a couple of heart-in-mouth moments, not least when he spilt an Albrighton effort only to be bailed out by the offside flag.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 5

Another tired showing from a player who has been a revelation this season. Made some good interceptions as usual and saw plenty of the ball, but must improve his forward runs and distribution. Did little wrong defensively.

Harry Maguire - 6

Booked early on in a slow start that epitomised United's nervousness. Going back to his former side, Maguire improved as the game wore on and kept Vardy quiet. It's been a mixed season for the Reds skipper, but ultimately its one that has ended with him leading the side to a top three finish.

Victor Lindelof - 9

The best of the back four, this was a huge performance from the Iceman. Looked assured playing out from the back, won everything in the air, used the ball well and never looked troubled by Vardy. Lindelof saved his best performance until last, in what was his best showing of the season. Immense. 

Brandon Williams - 6

Most positive of the two full-backs, he saw a lot of the ball and used it well. In his toughest examination of the season, Williams did his job well and caught the eye with his industry. Controlled aggression at the back, Williams has looked rash recently but did well here.

Nemanja Matic - 6

The stereotypical game of two halves for United's hit and miss Serbian. A passenger in the first half, he looked ragged against the Leicester press and was careless in possession, often losing the ball in dangerous areas. Matic improved in the second half, though, and carved the Foxes open with some lovely passes

Paul Pogba - 8

Dominant and controlled in midfield, and by far United's most creative player in the first half. Involved indirectly in both goals and Pogba looked the most likely to make something happen. Made amends after his rush of the blood to the head in midweek. That minor aberration aside, the Frenchman has made a huge difference to United since the restart.

Mason Greenwood - 7

A game in which United's brightest young star drifted in and out of. He made some good runs and created a few openings, but he was looked after well by the Leicester defence. Played a part in the opener when he won the ball high up the pitch and played in Martial for the penalty, also going close with a header. Next season will be a big one for the 18-year-old.

Bruno Fernandes - 5

A very uncharacteristic showing from Bruno Fernandes in another weary performance. Had a goal disallowed, but yet despite being below par he still made a difference by scoring from the spot - a goal of huge consequence for United. The last few weeks has not seen the best of him, but there can be no doubt the impact he has made.

Marcus Rashford - 6

Played far too deep, taking up the role of playmaker rather than finisher. Had two good chances in the first half and was involved in the Lingard goal when he won possession. Forced a good save from Schmeichel but a contender for United's player of the season struggled to make an impact.

Anthony Martial - 6

Brightest of the front three and looked a threat every time United went forward. Made the decisive dart forward to earn United's penalty and had two good chances in the first half. Another decent performance from the Frenchman, who ends the league season with 17 goals.

Jesse Lingard - for Greenwood 77 - 6

On what could be his final farewell in the Red of United, Lingard buzzed around and capitalised on a rare Schmeichel error to score. Did his job.

Did little but helped to wind the clock down by keeping the ball ticking over. Subject of the late lunge that saw Evans sent off. McTominay will probably play in the Europa League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 7

Job done. Got the result he needed and steered United to third place. Deserves huge credit for doing so having come from nowhere since the turn of the year. Team selection was good, United look re-energised and a third place finish is a huge improvement on last season.

Oh what a night! Manchester United sealed a momentous derby double with a nerve shredding victory over Pep Guardiola's subdued, soon to be deposed champions.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were clinging to the slenderest of leads after Anthony Martial's first half goal, when Old Trafford erupted as Scott McTominay seized on Ederson's errant throw out to steer the ball into the empty Stretford End net. It completed a hat-trick of wins over City and a huge, monumental victory that ensured United kept pace with Chelsea who won 4-0 against Everton earlier on Sunday.

Spirit, guts, willpower, resilience, courage and character - a team performance in every sense of the word.

Solskjaer 3-1 Guardiola - Manchester is Red!!

David de Gea - 7

For all of City's possession and territory, De Gea actually had little to do as the men in front of him did a simply magnificent job. Made a good save from Sterling early on and another from Phil Foden, but everything he had to do he did well. It was a day of contrasting fortunes for two of the league's best keepers. Ederson had a rare nightmare. A more comfortable than expected day at the office.

Victor Lindelof - 8

Imperious and solid alongside Maguire, Lindelof read the game superbly and shut down his area of the pitch. He and Maguire seemed to win everything in the air between them and never allowed a strangely subdued City a sniff. City passed their way down blind alleys and the Iceman - despite looking the weak link when the team was announced - was a big part of that. I'd have preferred to see Eric Bailly start instead but Lindelof more than justified his selection.

Harry Maguire - 10

I very rarely give players a ten, but Maguire was simply colossal in the wave of a City siege. Got nutmegged once by Aguero, but the man City could have signed won everything, made tackles, organised the defence and epitomised his side's performance. He seemed telepathic at times, drawn to every ball as if by magic. The captain rendered one of the best strikers in the world anonymous. A rock. Maguire was immense, magnificent, huge. My captain and man of the match no doubt. How City wished they could have signed him

Luke Shaw - 8

Got beaten a few time by the pace of Bernardo Silva but, stationed again on the left of a back three, Shaw dealt with everything that came his way. He has improved beyond all recognition and Solskjaer must take the credit for that. Such was City's frustrations, Pep Guardiola switched Silva with Sterling to try and open him up and then put Riyad Mahrez on him, but Shaw would not budge. Followed up his mightily impressive form with another excellent showing. Top class. He epitomised the team's resilience and courage.

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 9

Wan - Bissaka resumed his personal duel with Sterling and again came out on top. AWB harried and battered the City star into submission and pushed him to the fringes. A bundle of power, pace and strength, the guy never misses a tackle. He broke up attacks and bombed forward at will. Sterling must be sick of the sight of him. He just couldn't get past him, no matter what Sterling tried. Another huge individual performance. Immense again. A contender for United's player of the season.

Fred - 9

Very harshly booked in the first half for a dive that replays showed should have been a penalty. Admitted aided by the absence of key City man Kevin de Bruyne, who he would have been in direct opposition with, Fred was just as good as he was at the Etihad back in December. Superb both in defensive and attacking situations, he won everything, linked the play, his passing was superb and he seemed to be omnipotent. A man bang in form, he has epitomised United's resurgence and is finally getting the credit he deserves.

Nemanja Matic - 7

I would have picked Scott McTominay ahead of him, but credit where it's due to the in-form Serbian. Matic was excellent again as a shield in front of United's back three and, far from being over-run, he actually got the better of Ilkay Gundogan. It's a stunning transformation for a player who looked certain to leave last summer. Matic has been nothing short of magnificent since coming into the team, he'll never be our most skilful or most important player but he did his job well in a Rolls Royce performance.

Brandon Williams - 7

A mixed day for the Manchester-born alumni in his first Old Trafford league derby. He played a part in the first goal and dovetailed nicely between defence and attack. Didn't shy away from his task even though he was given a tough time by Mahrez when he came on with City desperate for a way back. Solid if not always spectacular, Williams kept his head in the firepit and made some key interceptions. Tried to get forward but got taken off as United shut down the game.

Bruno Fernandes - 7

Quiet by his standards but got a filthy assist for Martial's opener. Showed ingenuity and intelligence for the goal, went close from a couple of set pieces and was pushed up front as United clung grimly to their lead. A constant threat, Fernandes is the glue that holds this side together and at one point started an attack from the edge of his own 18 yard box. The brain, heart and lungs of this side - imagine where we'd be if we signed him in January. He demands excellence from those around him and is the ultimate leader.

Dan James - 6

Ran himself into the ground, I can't fault DJ's effort and work rate. But his decision making and final ball definitely need improvement. There was an occasion when he opted for goal and Ederson saved with Fernandes and Martial free in the box in space. It's still bugging me now but fortunately it didn't cost us. He ripped City to shreds back in the first meeting of the season in December, and had his moments this time around. His form has improved of late.

Anthony Martial - 8

Another typical performance from the languid, mercurial Frenchman. Ederson should have saved his shot that led to the first goal, as he became the first United player since CR7 in 2006/07 to score home and away against City in the same season. Had the hapless Nicolas Otamendi on toast all day and led the line superbly. A constant threat. Now has 16 for the season, one short of his best ever scoring season for the Reds. Showed awareness and a predatory instinct for the goal. He never stopped running and was pivotal to the counter attacking game plan. Excellent. Got subbed to a standing ovation late on.

Substitutes - Eric Bailly (for Williams, 78 minutes) - 6

Unlucky not to start, Bailly wasn't on long but did his bit as United attempted to shore things up and see out the game. Won a few headers and made two good clearances.

Scott McTominay (for Martial 78) - 6

Like Bailly, was only on for the final moments but played his part and scored the match winning goal in stoppage time. A 35 yarder over Ederson sparked the most buoyant scenes OT has seen for years. He knows what this fixture means and added energy and guile to the midfield at a time when United needed it. Helped the Reds to wrestle back an element of control and gave us another man to lock down the midfield.

Odion Ighalo (for Fernandes 88) - N/A

One sumptuous back heel to set up a late attack and helped us to get out but wasn't on long enough to rate. His first taste of a Manchester derby

Manager - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 9

Has now beaten the so called "best manager in the world" three times this season with another tactically perfect performance. Set United up to defend from the front, we were superbly organised and Ole deserves immense credit for putting together a ten match unbeaten run. Long may it continue.

Man City 1-2 Man Utd: Player ratings

Man Utd upset the applecart and derailed Pep Guardiola's title ambitions with a stunning victory in the derby. The result revived the Reds own aspirations and silenced the critics of United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Every player was immense, and our player ratings reflect that. Without further ado, we run the rule over those in red at the Etihad.

David de Gea - 7

Remarkably in an away derby at the home of the champions, De Gea had little to do. His opposite number Ederson was by far the busier of the two keepers, with De Gea mainly having to deal with shots from distance. He made a crucial, match winning save from Riyad Mahrez at 2-1 in the dying moments, clawing the ball away rather than back into the danger area. Great save!

Aaron Wan - Bissaka - 9.5

The Spiderman lived up to his name in an incredible performance on his Manchester derby debut. At one point, he even popped up on the left wing to make a tackle and win the ball back. Astonishing. One of the best players in world football in Raheem Sterling was forced to the fringes and rendered almost anonymous. Is there a better defender in the Premier League than this guy? A monstrous effort. Simply sensational. Blocked, tackled, headed, intercepted and shut down everything that was thrown at him. Magnificent. Colossal. Immense.

Harry Maguire - 8

Maguire will be disappointed with the goal we conceded, as he possibly should have picked up Otamendi who had a free header from the corner. That aside, Maguire enjoyed a steady, solid and commanding game at the heart of the defence. Showed leadership qualities and held the defence together as part of a simply immense collective display.

Victor Lindelof - 8

Immense. The Iceman channelled his inner Nemanja Vidic as he blocked everything, organised those around him and made a match winning block to deny Kevin de Bruyne. Read the game superbly and stood strong as United came under siege. Lindelof has had his critics but he was brilliant here. Shackled Gabriel Jesus superbly.

Luke Shaw - 7

Solskjaer's major selection headache was who to pick at left-back and he got it right. Although Shaw felt the pace a bit late on and got taken off, I thought he did well. He worked hard, got stuck in and did his best to support Marcus Rashford down the left. He made six clearances and two interceptions as United kept Guardiola's much vaunted attack quiet. An admirable effort.

Fred - 9

Goodness, was that really Fred or was it some sort of Roy Keane/Michael Carrick hybrid? What a performance from the Brazilian. I've been his biggest critic but he was good against Tottenham and even better here. Strong and tenacious, he put a shift in, stormed forward and did his bit defensively, linking the play to devastating effect. Tackled, pressed and passed with supreme confidence. Up against Rodri, David Silva and De Bruyne, he seized control of the midfield area and even at one point nutmegged the former to set up an attack. The ball seemed attracted to him like a magnet at times. Magnificent. Subject of some sickening racial abuse, he dealt with it very well too.

Scott McTominay - 8

Having this lad alongside him elevates Fred to another couple of notches. It's no co-incidence that our two best performances of the season - arguably our two best under Solskjaer - have come with the return of Lord Scott of McSauce. Solskjaer came to the Etihad with a gameplan and it worked to perfection. McTominay is a crucial part of that plan. An unsung hero in the side, McTominay worked like a trooper, won tackles, fought like a lion and did everything asked of him. He knows what this game means. A counter-attacking gameplan means you need a holding midfielder and McSauce did that superbly. Disciplined in front of his defence, his gamesmanship sucked the life out of City. What a player.

Daniel James - 8

Could have had a hat-trick in the first half and showed bravery and maturity beyond his years as United ripped City to pieces. It was his performance against City for Swansea in an FA Cup tie that reportedly persuaded United to sign him. He replicated that here. An absolute bargain at £15m. He chased every ball, lead the charge on the counter attack and even dropped back to help Wan - Bissaka in defence. He got an assist for Anthony Martial and was unlucky not to score himself. Excellent again.

Jesse Lingard - 7

Solskjaer picked a team built on pace and energy and Lingard was the man for the job. He's difficult to mark here. I don't think he was brilliant by any means, but by the same token he didn't do anything wrong either. Had a chance to score himself and was involved in the build up to Martial's goal. His energy and movement caused City problems and I still think he offers more off the ball than he does on it. He was the target of racial abuse from the Manchester City section but didn't rise to bait and kept his head in the firepit. Solskjaer got this one right.

Marcus Rashford - 9

A player in the form of his young career. A constant threat down the left, City could not get near him and he continued his fine run with the opening goal from the spot. Hit the bar with a clever lob, pulled the strings with patience and precision from the left, and no longer feels the need to desperately force himself on a match. He's unplayable right now and one of the most in form players on the planet. We never would have said any of this a few short weeks ago, so it's testament to the way he's playing. Immense again.

Anthony Martial - 8

On his return from injury, this was the very best of Martial. As is his wont, he drifted in and out of the game but still made his mark and was a constant menace on the break in the first half. Martial scored what turned out to be the match winning goal, even though Ederson should have done better. Gave Fernandinho no end of problems with his pace and trickery, in fact City could hardly lay a glove on him. Looked to have the stomach for the fight. He was taken off - perhaps understandably tiring - 15 minutes from the end but did everything he was asked to do.

Subs - Andreas Pereira (for Martial 74) - 6

Just not convinced by him. The only thing he really did of note was get booked seconds after coming on. Don't think United would have won this game had he started. Don't rate him.

Axel Tuanzebe (for Lingard 89) - N/A

Came on in the dying moments as Solskjaer shut up shop. No rating

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 9

In front of his former mentor Sir Alex Ferguson, this was a tactical masterpiece straight out of the great man's vintage. Outclassed Pep Guardiola emphatically, and deserves huge credit for a gameplan and team selection that was spot on. Did everything right. Would have been a 10 had we not conceded a goal. So pleased for him.
